Ovlov is a band I miss. The shoegaze-tinged indie rock outfit has been quiet since their 2021 release Buds, though a handful of demos from that era surfaced last year. Frontman Steve Hartlett releases solo material from time to time, and lately Theo Hartlett, the drummer, has been taking up guitar duties with Gouge Away. Today, however, we’re treated to a Mannequin Pussy cover of Ovlov, and that’s pretty exciting.
The rendition appears on Spotify Singles and revisits the group’s 2013 AM track “Where’s My Dini?,” which I’d call a modern indie rock classic. Here’s what Mannequin Pussy had to say about it:
You know, I think the best way for us to approach this song is to honor a song of our peers and friends that we love so much and that we think deserves a lot more attention, and that we hope other people will fall in love with their band because of this cover. That would be our goal for it. So this is all of our, kind of, one our favorite songs, collectively. And I think we’re a pretty varied band in what we listen to. And so when there’s an artist that we all truly love, it’s exciting for us to kind of explore getting to play that song together. And this is a beautiful song.
