Lido Pimienta, the Colombian-Canadian musician, releases her new album Caribenya this Friday. So far the project’s rollout has included the singles “Tóxica” and “Talento,” and today she brings another track to light with “Marea.”
In a message shared on Instagram, Pimienta describes “Marea” as a song about Caribbean youth existing and actively claiming their space and their right to joy, even in the face of what she calls parasite demons—gentrification, settler colonialism, displacement, land theft, and sexual exploitation. It’s portrayed as a cynical love song for the end of times, and she adds that through dance and the striking beauty of the Caribbean we resist.
