Are you drawn to deliberately raw lyrics that map the moment a relationship ends? Then this track might be your jam: “You thank me for a good year and go/ And you say it like you have to leave/ You’re sorry for the good parts, as well as what you really did wrong/ But it’s all the same to me.” Those lines mark the opening of the British-born, Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Fenne Lily’s new track “Thank You Sorry.” She goes straight to the point!
Her forthcoming album Win Win is set for release this fall, and it’s no surprise to learn that its creation happened in the wake of a nasty breakup. We already highlighted the lead single “Uh Huh,” and Lily follows with “Thank You Sorry,” a softly pretty song whose stark, piercing lyrics are delivered with a nearly blank, shrugged ease. In a press release, Lily explains, “Broken up with over the phone on Independence Day, I was told everything but the truth. This song is the truth; that I became an unwanted guest in a relationship, that I was treated like I meant nothing. I made something out of being nothing to someone.” The video, directed by Sage Szkabarnicki-Stuart, visually nods to Lily’s album cover. Check it out below.
Win Win is out 10/23 on Nettwerk.
