Hum Desiderata by Michael Stipe

July 26, 2026

Back in April, Michael Stipe stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to unveil a fresh track titled “The Rest Of Ever” and to reveal that a debut solo album is in the works. He’s now offering another preview, this time called “Hum Desiderata.”

The piece is listenable exclusively on the Joyfully Waiting sound platform. It pairs Stipe with additional vocalist Elizabeth Hatmaker as they recite Max Ehrmann’s 1927 poem “Desiderata” over an instrumental backdrop named “Hum,” composed by Stipe and Andy LeMaster.

In the prior month, he dropped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! to perform the Rooster theme song, “I Played The Fool,” live for the first time alongside Andrew Watt. Separately, his Simpsons episode has been nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Animated Program category.

I write about music as a cultural signal, following the artists, scenes, releases, and movements that shape how people listen today. My work focuses on discovery, context, and the stories behind the sounds that travel beyond borders.
