Is anyone ready for emo that isn’t afraid to writhe through the pop-punk sludge? A strain of irresistibly catchy pop-rock, loaded with tension and sprinting forward with anthemic gusto? That is exactly what you’ll receive from “Joyce Kilmer Service Area,” the debut single from wakelee’s forthcoming album under construction forever.
The Brooklyn-based outfit is slated to tour this autumn alongside Hot Mulligan, whose guitarist Chris Freeman contributed extra production to the new LP alongside Zach Aumueller, and this track sits in a space that nods to the nasal pop-punk vibe of that band. I notice a jittery, anxious neck-snapping intensity that calls to mind PUP, and perhaps a hint of Jimmy Eat World—electrified, maybe?
