Former U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly offered his condolences to Dolly Parton following the entertainer’s passing.
He indicated that he plans to issue an order to lower the United States flag to half-mast in her honor.
Trump conveyed his sorrow over the loss of the legendary performer via Truth Social.
“It is with deep sadness that we note Dolly Parton, one of the most influential voices in country music—and beyond—as having died. This represents a significant loss for millions of people. There has never been anyone else like her, and there never will be.”
“To honor her memory, I will reduce the American flag nationwide to half-mast for a seven-day period, beginning tonight at 6:00 p.m. Rest in peace, Dolly. The world loves you.”
Parton is among the select handful of entertainers to receive such an honor, since lowering of American flags is typically reserved for major political and military figures or moments of national tragedy.
Parton died in Nashville on Tuesday. She had been dealing with health issues for about a year and was forced to postpone a planned Las Vegas residency in September, before canceling the shows in May.
“I have some good news and a little bad news,” she shared at the time. “The good news is I’m responding really well to meds and treatments, and I’m improving every day. Now, the bad news is that it’s gonna take me a little while before I’m up to stage performance level because some of the meds and treatments make me a little swimmy-headed, as my grandma used to say.”
She was most recently working on a renewed version of her life story, Dolly: A True Original Musical, which is set to debut on Broadway in December.
