Nobody will ever be permitted to utter a single rude word about Samira Winter in my presence. She records lush, hazy shoegaze under the moniker Winter, and she also serves as Stereogum’s latest VJ. Earlier this year, I spent several days with Winter at Salt Lake City’s Kilby Block Party, where she shot this instantly timeless video. She was an outstanding companion—cool in the extreme. One morning I woke up with a brutal hangover and had to excuse myself from talking to her so I could vomit in some bushes. She didn’t mock me for it. I would have mocked myself for that, but she did not. An admirable class act.
If I didn’t like Winter’s music, I wouldn’t say anything rude about her either; I’d simply fall silent and perhaps steer the chat elsewhere. Fortunate for all of us, I do enjoy her music, and I suspect you might too. Next month, Winter will release her Romantix Mixtape EP, a companion piece to the 2025 album Adult Romantix. We’ve already shared her newly re-recorded takes on “without you,” featuring Soccer Mommy, and “hollow.” Today, she collaborates with Peel Dream Magazine’s Joe Stevens for a gentle acoustic rendition of “hide-a-lullaby,” which originally appeared as a sweeping Tanukichan collaboration.
In a press release, Winter explains, “I hadn’t imagined ‘hide-a-lullaby’ in a stripped-down acoustic format before, but this fresh rendition with Peel Dream Magazine brings a new sense of reinvention and a new viewpoint to the song.” The track’s dreamlike Takachrome-directed video comprises Super 8 footage of Winter on tour in Tokyo.
