A little over ten years have passed since Prince departed, and it seems we’re only beginning to plumb the depths of the famously prolific artist’s expansive trove of unheard material. Today, the Prince estate unveils Timeless, a fresh compilation of rare and previously unreleased Prince recordings that trace his earliest moments from 1977 up to his passing in 2016. Most of these tracks have circulated for years in various forms, yet there is at least one cut on Timeless that appears to be completely new.
In 2012, Prince laid down the lush, richly orchestrated midtempo soul ballad “Bestest Friend.” It isn’t typically hailed as a highlight of his career, but the track itself is expansive, polished, and stunning. The back-and-forth guitar and horn sections are especially appealing. I have a hunch it would have sounded devastating in a live setting. Take a listen below.
