James Goodson, a Richmond-based rock ‘n’ roll advocate and, full disclosure, an occasional show buddy of mine, is also the solo engine behind Dazy — a project that has produced a torrent of standout tracks since Goodson began anonymously releasing Bandcamp tunes during the COVID summer of 2020. In 2021, a year before he earned a Stereogum Artist To Watch nod, Goodson dropped MAXIMUMBLASTSUPERLOUD: The First 24 Songs, a compilation documenting Dazy’s debut year. Today, he unveils plans to follow it with MAXIMUMBLASTSUPERLOUD Vol. 2: 24 Songs From 2023-2026, another collection that includes a number of tracks we haven’t heard yet.
To date, Dazy has issued exactly one proper album, 2022’s OUTOFBODY. Since then, he has kept the pipeline flowing with new material, typically releasing one or two tracks at a time. (The latest pair, “BIG Problem” and “Gravity,” surfaced in May.) Along the way, Dazy has collaborated with artists such as Militarie Gun and Bodysync, and his own songs have embraced more psychedelic trip-hop textures without losing the fuzzed-out ’90s alt-pop immediacy that defined his early work.
Seven of the tracks on MAXIMUMBLASTSUPERLOUD Vol. 2 are brand-new, including “Beat Change,” the single issued today. It’s a colossal, swirling rocker that, at five and a half minutes, may be the longest and most ambitious piece he’s produced yet. I’m really into this song, which opens loud and trippy and only intensifies in volume and headspace as it unfolds. Goodson delivers some genuinely poignant lyrics about aging and the way life’s transience makes that fear feel even sharper. Below, you’ll find “Beat Change,” the MAXIMUMBLASTSUPERLOUD Vol. 2 tracklist, and the date for Dazy’s upcoming tour with Militarie Gun, Softcult, and Shady Nasty.
