Two members of the synthpop duo Boy Harsher first crossed paths in film school, and their previous album served as the soundtrack for The Runner, a 40-minute short they produced in 2022. They are now developing their first feature, The Lonely Woman, which will star Chloë Sevigny, FKA twigs, Sturgill Simpson, and Will Oldham. That’s exciting! Before they wrap that up, they plan to release a new album, Get Mean, which is equally intriguing.
Get Mean comes out in a few weeks, and we’ve already posted the early singles “Jeans” and “Hard Beat.” I’ve had a listen to the record, and it really clicks with me. Today, Boy Harsher share another advance single. “Tough Luck (When You Don’t Call)” is a heartbreak-inflected lament set to a buoyant rhythm. More than any other genre, synthpop excels at that kind of mood/sentiment juxtaposition. Listen below.
