The adventurous, genre-blurring Canadian producer Ryan Hemsworth has roots tracing back to the early cloud-rap days. These days, he split his time between the duo Bodysync and Gia Margaret’s live lineup, and he’s on the verge of revisiting solo territory with Numbskull, his first full-length record in eight years. The project features collaborators such as Tegan And Sara and MSPAINT, and Hemsworth has just shared a fresh track with Nana Lourdes, the Portuguese psych-pop singer and producer.
When Hemsworth revealed Numbskull last month, he rolled out two tracks: “One Step,” featuring Illuminati Hotties’ Sarah Tudzin, and “A Display Of Emotion,” which quickly became one of our favorite songs of the week. (It charted at No. 2, just behind Hemsworth’s old collaborator Tinashe.) His latest release, “I Missed You More,” arrives as a hazy, chopped-up, deconstructed pop tune that still delivers a strong melodic and emotional punch. In a press release, Hemsworth explains:
I began this track with Nana Lourdes aiming for something that sounded like the Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, but I couldn’t quite land it. I tested about eight very different versions. I finally settled on cutting and sampling the guitar I had, and that move brought me back to an early 2010s chillwave vibe I’d been missing. Nana is a dream to work with and can instantly craft infectious pop melodies while engineering things with precision.
Lourdes adds, “Ryan and I started this a million years ago, and it’s gone through just as many versions since, but I’m really glad this is the one that finally made it into the world. I’m grateful and honored to have been a small part of it.” Check it out below.
Numbskull is slated for release on 10/21 via Topshelf.
