Squeeze postponed a U.S. concert on Thursday in light of the “tragic” death of a crew member who was crushed beneath their tour bus.
Led by Glenn Tilbrook, the group had been slated to perform in Vienna, Virginia on Thursday evening as part of their ongoing run of shows with Adam Ant and Haircut 100.
In a posted statement, the Up the Junction veterans confirmed the cancellation of the date just hours before they were due to take the stage at the Wolf Trap National Park For The Performing Arts.
“Squeeze are deeply saddened and shocked by an incident that occurred at the venue earlier today, which resulted in the loss of a life,” they wrote on their social media pages. “After discussions with the venue and the relevant authorities, the decision was made to cancel this evening’s performance.”
According to local news outlet Fox 5, the incident involved a road crew member who was crushed when the vehicle he was working on collapsed on top of him. Police told the outlet that he was pronounced dead at the scene, attributing the accident, which happened in the venue’s car park, to a failure of “supporting apparatus.”
A representative for the venue issued their own statement, saying, “There was an accident involving a member of the community at Wolf Trap National Park today, tragically resulting in a loss of life. Out of respect, tonight’s show has been cancelled.”
Speaking about rescheduling, the band added, “We will work with the promoter and venue regarding the possibility of rescheduling the show and will communicate further information to ticket holders as soon as it is available. Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this tragic event.”
Despite the tragedy, Squeeze’s tour is set to carry on in Ohio on Friday, with further dates in Illinois, Colorado, Utah, California and other stops throughout the month, before they return to their native U.K. in November.
