Lou Turner is recognized as one third of the Nashville-based rootsy, folk-leaning indie group Styrofoam Winos, and as a steady presence in Ryan Davis’ Roadhouse Band. In addition to two solo records, a third is poised to arrive with this fall’s release of Strangels. The freshly announced album opens with the track “Ants Underfoot,” released today as the lead single.
Turner took on producing duties for Strangels, with Trevor Nikrant, her partner and fellow Styrofoam Winos member, handling mixing alongside her involvement. Nikrant contributed additional instrumentation as well. The album was produced by Turner, while Trevor Nikrant handled engineering and mixing at the Golden Tone Zone, aided by Turner.
Strangely enough, this record feels like the narrative of my own life. Not so much about discovering a single voice, but about collecting all my diverse voices into one place. The road-worn musician, the former librarian who cherishes quiet time at home with her cats. And especially the pastor’s kid who, after hours in a church, entertained herself by composing songs and lyrics in an empty choir loft. Spending time with the peculiar angels encountered along the journey. I am grateful to everyone who supported this project, whether they realized it or not. I hope you enjoy listening.
The flute-rich track “Ants Underfoot” carries a relaxed yet wistful mood, with Turner mulling over levels of culpability and offering apologies to the insects she crushes underfoot. At one moment she sings, “Truthfully/ Some uncertainty/ Helps us to believe/ We don’t know everything,” a sentiment that later shifts to “Hopefully/ Some uncertainty/ Helps us to receive/ We can’t get everything.” Turner also collaborated with Joe Kenkel, her fellow Styrofoam Winos member, to create the “Ants Underfoot” video, which you can view below.
