Wishy, the notable Indianapolis indie-pop group, earned a spot as Stereogum’s Band To Watch in 2023, and they’ve since delivered on that early promise on several occasions. Roughly a month from now, they’ll release their forthcoming album Nature’s Pill. It seems this is one of those instances where a large portion of the record will already be out in the wild before the full project lands. Wishy has already rolled out the early tracks “Lovesick,” “All The Rage,” and “Sensational,” and a fresh single arrives today.
Wishy’s new track “Mona Lisa” isn’t a Slick Rick cover. (Plenty of songs share that title, but the Slick Rick version was the first thing that sprang to mind.) This “Mona Lisa” sits in that quasi-ironic slacker-pop realm where, here, singer/guitarist Kevin Krauter rhymes “smile” with “wow” and pulls it off. It gains momentum over its four-and-a-half-minute run, with its hooks burning brighter as it goes.
Krauter describes “Mona Lisa” like this: “A courtroom drama starring love and apathy. Was all that pleasure worth all that pain? Will the opposing witness withstand cross-examination? You be the judge!” Check out the Nate Kahn-directed video below.
