Twisted Teens have surged in popularity recently. The New Orleans outfit revealed its third studio release of the year, The Holy Cross Tigers, following the February release of Blame The Clown and the July drop of Florida Water Blues. Yesterday, Jeff Tweedy offered his own stripped-down take on Blame The Clown‘s “Wild Connection” for his Substack.
The Wilco frontman tends to share minimalist cover versions on his newsletter, such as Cameron Winter’s “Love Takes Miles” and Star Moles’ “Real Magic.” Regarding his rendition of “Wild Connection,” Tweedy wrote:
I’ve just returned from Europe and I’m sharing a track by Twisted Teens. I recently pointed to another record of theirs. I really enjoy a good number of their songs, and Caspian’s voice appeals to me. I have a hard time avoiding singing like him. That happens with many vocalists I admire. When I perform their songs, I make a deliberate effort not to imitate. Yet one reason I cover so many tunes is that it’s rewarding to hear something you enjoy and then explore what it feels like to try it on, almost the way you would try on clothes. Sometimes the fit is right, other times it seems I’m still searching for a way to sound like myself.
With this one, I feel like I still sound like myself. I even sense I might resemble a younger version of myself.
