Alicia Gaines and Brian Cundiff return with a brand-new Ganser track, released just before a stretch of performances supporting Bikini Kill. The fresh single, “Futuretripping,” sports Mad Men-style cover art, a video directed by Gaines, and notably punchy bass lines. The production is infused with a palette of engaging sonic flares, yet Gaines’s words steal the show for their wit and clarity without fanfare. One line that sticks with me:

Screens say we’re fineA man is hawking umbrellas
beneath a clear sky, singingYou can borrow tomorrow

but he’s hard to find
Gaines weighed in on the track:
As we prepared to hit the road with Bikini Kill, I found myself drawn to the idea of cheating time—stealing a little extra of it for ourselves. After returning from Europe earlier this year, our sense of time felt distorted as life in Chicago pressed us back into the ordinary, yet the fantastical kept seeping through. Reaching toward tomorrow for a touch more of today became an inside joke that sparked “Futuretripping.”
And from Cundiff:
Everyone seems to be waiting for a sign to shift. People tend to linger, awaiting instruction on what to react to and what to do, and I think you can hear a bit of that restlessness in the music and words as well. It’s this impulse—that it isn’t tomorrow while also craving more time today, right now.
