Ten years ago it would have been hard to imagine a landscape where a sizable slice of the indie underground embraces the mission of meticulously reviving the late-’90s alt‑rock‑era power‑pop vibe that Gin Blossoms and the Lemonheads once popularized. Yet that glorious reality is unfolding, with fish narc generously fueling the trend. In a vibe that recalls a cooler alternate‑reality MGK, Ben Funkhouser has traveled from a SoundCloud rapper persona toward a fuzz‑drenched, jangly‑pop artisan. And more than last year’s frog song, early previews of his forthcoming record Uncle prove that he’s honed his craft quite a bit.
Last month fish narc kicked off the album cycle with the winsome “Much Less Me.” Today he returns with another standout piece titled “Big Dumb World.” The lead guitar parts slice through and dance around those massive chords, while Funkhouser’s deep, textured voice glides through the hooks with a smooth, almost velvety ease.
