Maxwell Byrne, an Australian producer and songwriter who releases music under the guise of 1tbsp, returned this week with a track that is as perplexing as it is seductive. “Wish You Luck” features Vienna-based artist Juanita Sohé Pereira Lillo, who goes by kid on air. The single follows 1tbsp’s 2025 EP Hotel Living and the more recent cuts “Pink Dress” and “Soulseek,” signaling the dawn of a fresh chapter for the project.
“Wish You Luck” thrives on an odd, charged tension: Byrne’s lively drum-machine groove jostles against Lillo’s laid-back vocal delivery. “I’m finally alone,” she intones during the fractured chorus, punctuating with a biting “ha ha ha” that resembles a smug girl who has just tripped her rival at the mall. “I instantly loved how the lyrics felt very mechanical, kind of repetitive and functional like a factory,” Byrne explained in a press release. “It really fits the themes I’m exploring in my next work.”
The track arrives with a video Byrne co-directed with Elif Gündüz, featuring styling by Alara Koçman and Pereira. The visual follows Byrne and Lillo through a state of hyper-awareness, fixated on the ubiquity of germs and the dynamics of consumption. It feels eerie and apt for our post-pandemic moment.
