Nearly four years have passed since Tegan And Sara unveiled Crybaby, their latest full-length release. The much-loved twin sisters have kept themselves busy in the interim—joining forces with artists like Alex Lahey and Ryan Hemsworth, making appearances on The Simpsons, and recounting Tegan Quin’s experience of identity theft in the Hulu documentary Fanatical: The Catfishing Of Tegan And Sara. Now they return with a breezy, sunlit synth-pop team-up that feels like a summer anthem.
Tegan And Sara’s newest track, “Our Year,” brings in two fellow Canadian talents: singer Lights and electronic producer Felix Cartal. Two years earlier, the duo teamed with Cartal on his single “Right On Time,” while Lights has performed covers of T&S and Cartal in live sets. If that previous collaboration carried a cold, mechanical edge, this outing leans in the opposite direction. Set against radiant, sun-soaked synths with a hint of Passion Pit, the trio delivers a pleasantly bittersweet mood: “Everyone keeps telling me it’s gonna be our year.”
Tegan Quin, who is also gearing up to publish a new young-adult novel, Merry Christmess, as part of her Clementine Twins series, sent the “Our Year” demo to Cartal. He recalls it carrying “that classic Tegan and Sara vibe I’ve always loved—unafraid to be playful yet totally genuine and refreshing.” Tegan notes that the track gained a new spark once Lights joined, and Lights adds, “This feels like one of those milestone creative experiences you’d be proud to carry forward. I’ve looked up to Tegan And Sara for years, both for their music and what they stand for.”
On a technical level, “Our Year” marks Tegan And Sara’s first single since Crybaby, excluding all their guest appearances and their 2023 Elvis Costello/Dave Edmunds cover. The bright, sunny video directed by Kyle S. Lee closes with a golden-hour rooftop hangout above a city skyline, a moment that’s enchanting yet a touch nerve-wracking.
