Matty Healy has stated that The 1975’s next studio effort is nearly wrapped up.
Earlier in the year, the band hinted they were at work on a successor to 2022’s Being Funny in a Foreign Language, and Healy has now offered fans a positive update via a surprise video message.
During an event in North Shields on Friday (25.09.26) for Sunday For Sammy, a regional charity of which the singer serves as patron, Matty and his father Tim Healy appeared on the venue’s big screens.
Thanking the attendees for supporting the fundraiser, which featured a tribute act called The 9075, Matty commented: “I’m trying to finish this album, I don’t know if I’m ever gonna do it, but I’ve nearly finished it. Yeah, it’s nearly done.”
Back in February, the 37-year-old frontman disclosed that he was keeping himself busy with new music while also playing Arc Raiders, a dystopian extraction shooter slated for 2025.
He posted on Reddit: “Hellooo I have been living in the studio and not sleeping much (happens I think normally one month a year) and after work playing Arc Raiders almost religiously. I’ve never had a game that’s part of my life like an album or something it has become something I take quite seriously. Would be cool to play with you guys – any suggestions of how to do it without doxing my gamer tag and just blowing my shit up? Loveeeee m x (sic)”
Toward the end of 2025, Matty warned his life would be busy over the following two years, telling his Reddit followers: “Feeling very unc and very lucky to be in 1975 atm. Next two years looks mental (sic)”
Denise Welch, Matty’s television-star mother, had previously revealed that she’d heard some of the band’s new material during their downtime from the road. Speaking at the Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards in October, she was quoted by the Daily Star as saying: “It’s fabulous. It’s very different, but it’s got the DNA of The 1975, I think you’ll love it.”
Matty also acknowledged the existence of two albums, one of which is titled Dogs. During a December Q&A at Gateshead College, he told students: “We made two. It might be one, it might be two… but yeah, we’ve made two albums.”
The Love Me group’s manager, Jamie Oborne of Dirty Hit, told The Money Trench podcast: “They’re making a record at the moment. I don’t know when it will come out, but they’re making one. I think they’ve earned the right to take their time. The world’s gonna be listening, so it needs to be right.”
