The Mighty Sparrow has passed away at the age of ninety-one.
The renowned calypsonian died peacefully in New York on Sunday after a brief illness, surrounded by those close to him.
“It is with profound sorrow that we share the passing of Trinidad and Tobago’s Calypso icon, Slinger Francisco, known to the world as The Mighty Sparrow,” the singer’s family stated.
“He stood as an enduring pillar of the entertainment scene, highly regarded for his mastery and elegance as a singer, songwriter and mentor; cherished by many. He was also a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, life partner and friend.”
Sparrow, widely recognized as one of the Caribbean’s most influential figures in music, built a career spanning more than seven decades. He earned international renown for his distinct voice, quick wit, and socially and politically charged commentary.
Born in 1935 in Grenada, he moved to Trinidad during childhood, where his lively stage performances earned him the nickname Little Sparrow. He later adopted the name Mighty Sparrow.
Sparrow rose to prominence as one of Trinidad and Tobago’s leading calypsonians in the mid-1950s. In 1956, he claimed the Calypso Monarch title for Jean and Dinah, his first major hit that reflected the social changes following the closure of U.S. military bases in Trinidad.
He went on to become one of calypso’s most decorated artists, claiming Trinidad and Tobago’s Calypso Monarch crown eight times. He also won the Calypso King of Kings competition twice, in 1985 and 1988.
Often referred to as the Calypso King of the World, Sparrow was regarded as a mentor and a source of inspiration for successive generations of Caribbean performers.
Affectionately called Birdie by countless fans, he recorded hundreds of songs over the course of his career and performed across the globe, including a show at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
