In May, Charli XCX unveiled “Rock Music,” the bold lead single from her forthcoming album Music, Fashion, Film. Upon first listen, the track felt like a giddy, provocative prank: “I think the dancefloor is dead, so now we’re making rawwwwwwwk music.” Madonna, poised to issue her own dancefloor‑centric record, briefly bristled, but the disagreement didn’t endure, and Charli is set to appear on Madonna’s “Danceteria” remix, slated for Friday. In the meantime, Show Me The Body have taken “Rock Music” and transformed it into rock music.
Show Me The Body are New Yorkers, like Madonna, and their sound, a jaggedly swaggering hardcore-adjacent banjo-driven onslaught, doesn’t fit into any neat genre boxes. You could simply say that they’re makin’ rock music.
A few weeks before the release of Music, Fashion, Film, SMTB dropped Alone Together, the fierce new LP they cut with producers Kenneth Blume and Klas Åhlund. During a visit to the Spotify Live Room, Show Me The Body performed a live-in-studio version of their own song “Do What’s Right (Happy)” and unleashed a wild, twisted take on Charli XCX’s “Rock Music.” Frontman Julian Cashwan Pratt hollers Charli’s tossed-off lines with maximum severity. It’s a good time. Check it out below.
Alone Together is out now on Loma Vista.
