Madonna disclosed that she endured a five-day wait for a reply from Sabrina Carpenter’s team after she proposed a collaboration.
The Vogue icon and Espresso singer joined forces onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in Los Angeles on Sunday night to receive the Best Collaboration award for Bring Your Love.
During their acceptance moment, MadonnaPlayfully teased Sabrina’s team, revealing the delay before she reached out to Sabrina directly via social media.
She explained that she has little patience: after five days with no connection and no word on whether Sabrina wanted to record the track with her, she sent Sabrina a direct message, which Sabrina saw and replied to, prompting their subsequent studio session within weeks. The moment left the Manchild singer looking stunned yet amused, while Madonna praised the experience as fabulous.
Sabrina then defended her crew, joking that they were backstage freaking out. “My team does respond, for everyone’s clarity,” she asserted. “They do answer people, but I respond more quickly. So coming straight to me is always the best way to reach me.”
The veteran artist kicked off the VMAs with her first performance at the ceremony in 23 years. Sabrina joined her for a rendition of Bring Your Love before Charli XCX made a surprise appearance for Danceteria Afterhours, her fresh remix with Madonna.
The bathroom-stall-inspired stage design also featured cameos from Julia Garner, Debi Mazar, Seth Rogen, Sombr and producer Andrew Watt.
Bring Your Love was released in April as the lead single from Madonna’s Confessions II, and the duo had previously performed it live during Sabrina’s Coachella headlining set that month.
