In June, SOAK resurfaced with a heartrending, stripped-down ballad titled “Death Valley Fridge Magnet.” Today, Bridie Monds-Watson reveals their forthcoming record decembers and unveils its moving opening track.
“When I try to describe the album, I always return to a line from Thomas Wolfe’s novel You Can’t Go Home Again,” the Irish singer-songwriter explains, “where he writes ‘You can’t go back home to your family, back home to your childhood, back home to romantic love… back home to the old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time — back home to the escapes of Time and Memory.’ I think for a long while I wanted to debunk that notion — perhaps the familiarity of before felt safe. In the end I realized that wasn’t a viable way to live and had to learn how to lean into the rest of my life. In a sense, decembers is about forgiveness.”
