Episode 7: Loma Linda

October 6, 2026

Jennifer Finch, the enduring bassist at the heart of the celebrated veteran grunge-punk outfit L7, passed away in July at 59, just days after she disclosed a brain cancer diagnosis. Only a few months before Finch’s passing, L7 announced plans for what was billed as their final tour. At Finch’s request, the band is proceeding with that trek, which is set to commence on Tuesday in San Diego. Today, L7 released a fresh track to accompany the tour’s kickoff.

Jennifer Finch originally exited L7 in 1996, and the band carried on with a few other bassists before ultimately breaking up. One of those players was Janis Tanaka, a former member of Courtney Love’s circle and Kat Bjelland’s short-lived 1980s group Pagan Babies. Tanaka spent a couple of years with L7 before later spending a lengthy period as part of Pink’s touring lineup. She was part of L7 in 2003, when the band wrote and recorded the demo for “Loma Linda,” their catchy, anthemic new single. In a press release, bandleader Donita Sparks explains:

While digging through the band’s archives, I came across this unfinished track from Janis’s time with the group. It still carried a fresh, unmistakably L7 vibe, so we laid down new vocals with updated lyrics and a few extra layers, and wrapped it up in a couple of days before this upcoming tour.
