The War On Drugs appear to be edging toward a fresh album cycle, yet there is currently no information about a successor to 2021’s I Don’t Live Here Anymore. What can be confirmed are details about two new double albums from member Robbie Bennett.
On December 11, Bennett will release Steloken and Circulation, both serving as follow-ups to his 2020 solo project Permanent World. The projects reportedly began as piano-centered ideas and explored classical counterpoint, but they evolved on the keyboard setup Bennett uses with The War On Drugs, which includes gear such as an Oberheim OB-X8 synthesizer, a Fender Rhodes, and a Soma Terra, described as “a polyphonic microtonal synthesizer with a gyroscope and pressure-sensitive sensors.” Bennett adds, “I want the music to be like you’re walking through an unfamiliar place you want to keep exploring and never have to circle back to where you started.”
You can hear that impulse in two tracks released this week, “Sister” from Steloken and “The Light On Your Face” from Circulation. Check them out below.
Steloken and Circulation are out 12/11 on American Dreams.
