Florence Road, a bright and captivating young Irish outfit, issued a standalone single titled “7563” this August, and they have just completed a North American tour a week ago. While they were in Los Angeles, someone smashed into their tour van and took their gear, yet they pressed on with the tour after supporters like Eddie Vedder lent them gear. Today, they unveil the crisp, exuberant new track “Wish Upon You.” As ever, Lily Aron’s expansive, expressive voice remains at the center, but my favorite moment comes when the full-band harmonies swell into a scream right before the chorus. Here is the band’s own take on it:
We hadn’t mapped out a plan for the song, but it ended up turning into a love song without us really intending it. It captures that moment when you’re with someone and everything just feels a touch easier. You’re not overthinking it; you’re simply glad to be near them. In hindsight, it’s likely one of the simplest, most resolute songs we’ve written, and I think that’s what gives it significance for us. There isn’t a heavy sadness behind it or a convoluted backstory. It’s just about being happy, letting yourself believe in something good, and not feeling the need to talk yourself out of it.
