In recent years, Nikki Nair, a dance producer based in Atlanta, has teamed up with notable figures such as Hudson Mohawke and The Avalanches. A couple of months prior, he issued an EP titled The Sick Dimension on dh2, George Daniel’s dance-forward Dirty Hit imprint. Now, he’s lining up another EP for release on a different label.
Next week, Nair is set to drop his new EP Majestic Animals through Hyperdub, the London-based label. It marks his first solo release on Hyperdub, though he and Japanese producer Foodman collaborated on the record Nagoya for the same label last year. Every track on Majestic Animals carries the name of a distinct animal. In the Bandcamp description, Nair explains, “I think this record is good to listen to while seeing animals, and I was thinking about these animals while making the music. Animals are beautiful and mysterious, and I was likely thinking about this while writing this.”
The opening track, “Groundhogs,” is a buoyantly springy instrumental with drum sounds that seem to erupt at you from every direction. Check it out below.
