Last month, Mynolia revealed plans for her debut album Salt Around My Bed, slated for release next year. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter has already shared tracks such as “Needle,” “Run Like Hell,” and “Holy Line,” and she returns with the intimate “Take The Mountain By Surprise,” a song conceived and recorded in a single go.
“This track had an unconventional birth, sparked by an unusual guitar tuning I used years ago for a playful tune named ‘Sweatpants And Straitjackets’,” the musician explains, continuing:
“That B section became the foundation for the guitar in this piece, and suddenly the lyrics, sections, and instrumentation all came together at once. I remember drafting and recording this song in one sitting after a heavy rainstorm had washed out part of the mountain road to my house. A natural boundary formed between my home and the outside world, and it was exactly what I needed. I handed it to Florian Holoubek for drums and then to Rich Ruth for final production, mix, and synth flourishes. ‘I wish the creek would rise, take the mountain by surprise / As the landslide pulls away there’s space for me too, today.’ Cultivating smallness to be easier for others to digest often has an expiration date. It’s better to confess in song and draw that boundary, since a mudslide won’t always accomplish it.
