Body Wash: The Renown

October 15, 2026

Bodywash’s Laughing At Noise appears to be shaping up into a genuine highlight. The Canadian dream-pop duo won us over with “Come And Go” and “Lapsang,” the latter earning a spot on our list of the five best tracks of the week. The latest release, “La Renommée,” unfolds as a hypnotic rocker drawn from Sonic Youth’s influence.

“I’d been reading Kim Gordon’s autobiography and listening to a lot of EVOL-era Sonic Youth during that period, and I wanted to craft a song that carried the same quiet urgency,” says Chris Steward. “I had no expectation that the bossa nova-inspired drums in the opening verse would pan out as well as they did.”

Long Decter adds, “The lyrics are half about a fictional bartender, half about a real Montreal statue called La Renommée, a winged woman in Jeanne Mance Parc (which I had in mind thanks to Kasia Van Schaik’s book Women Among Monuments). The conceit is that those two figures might be the same entity—watching over the city from their fixed vantage point.”

I write about music as a cultural signal, following the artists, scenes, releases, and movements that shape how people listen today. My work focuses on discovery, context, and the stories behind the sounds that travel beyond borders.
