Come early next year, the idiosyncratic Philadelphia punk outfit Soul Glo returns with NA I’M GON GRAB ALLAT, the eagerly awaited follow-up to their 2022 breakout Diaspora Problems. The record is already shaping up to be something special. We’ve already shared the opening cut “February Theory,” a wild eruption threaded with hints of club music. Today, Soul Glo unveil another track, this time a collaboration with Tunde Adebimpe of TV On The Radio.
The prospect of Tunde Adebimpe lending his voice to a Soul Glo track is mind-blowing. It feels like a compact echo of TV On The Radio bringing David Bowie into the mix for “Province” two decades ago, albeit on a smaller scale. True to form, Soul Glo don’t abandon their own voice just because a legend is featured. The track, titled “Ppl Worried,” careens forward in a thunderous, irregular pace as it skewers coke use and the fear it stirs in those around you: “Love enters through the nose! The nostril’s my favorite hole! I can’t fucking quit it, bro!” The song sounds wired, too. The pounding drums and rallying chants land hard, and Pierce Jordan’s feral rap delivery slices through with savage energy.
Pierce Jordan isn’t the lone guest on NA I’M GON GRAB ALLAT; the record also features contributions from Oxbow’s Eugene Robinson, Commitment’s Tati Salazar, Mannequin Pussy’s Colins “Bear” Regisford, and rappers MIKE and Bbymutha. Soul Glo are currently out on tour with Chat Pile and Shallowater, so if you can swing a show, go check them out. Check out “Ppl Worried” below.
NA I’M GON GRAB ALLAT is out 1/15 on Epitaph.
