This Is The Kit: Safety Valve Featuring Richard Dawson

November 2, 2026

Kate Stables has spent years crafting thoughtful indie folk-rock under the banner This Is The Kit, and there’s always a dependable new release from her. She delivered again last month with “Skip A Stone,” the opening track from her forthcoming album Ghost Coat. The next single arrives as a thoughtful duet with Richard Dawson called “Safety Valve,” and for anyone who has followed these artists over time, hearing them collaborate is a must-listen.

Stables told FLOOD this:

This tune is for the friends who rush to help when you’re in need. A helping hand. Someone who listens without judging. And getting out on your bicycle and feeling better.

Speaking of kind, non-judgmental people, I’d long dreamed of inviting Richard Dawson to contribute to the new record and at last gathered the courage to ask him to sing on this track. He graciously accepted the challenge and it instantly turned it into one of my favourite songs on the album. Absolute legend. The finest pipes in the business.

Listen below.

Ghost Coat is slated for release on 1/15 through Memphis Industries. You can pre-order it here.

I write about music as a cultural signal, following the artists, scenes, releases, and movements that shape how people listen today. My work focuses on discovery, context, and the stories behind the sounds that travel beyond borders.
