Alanis Morissette reveals her pansexual identity

November 8, 2026

Alanis Morissette has publicly stated that she identifies as pansexual.

The Canadian singer-songwriter shared this during the most recent installment of the Handsome podcast, which is hosted by Tig Notaro alongside Fortune Feimster and Mae Martin.

As the chat neared its end, Feimster addressed the performer, saying, “I feel sympathy for the men who hurt you, but I’m not regretting the songs that grew out of that experience,” and added, “Did you ever consider embracing a lesbian identity because of it?”

Morissette responded, “I’m pansexual, so yes.”

In response, Notaro interjected, “Wait, you’re not truly pansexual, are you?”

“I am,” Morissette clarified.

Pansexuality can be understood as a sexual, romantic, or emotional attraction to people regardless of their gender identity or biological sex.

When the hosts joked that she should have led the episode with this announcement, Morissette quipped, “I prefer to save it for the epilogue.”

The Canadian singer-songwriter has been married to Mario ‘Souleye’ Treadway since 2010. They are parents to Ever, 15, Onyx, 10, and Winter, seven.

Morissette first gained widespread fame in 1995 with Jagged Little Pill, an album that became one of the defining records of its era. It was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2019, a project that earned her two Tony Awards.

This year, Morissette was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
