Alanis Morissette is back to remind you of the Christ-mess you left behind when you wandered off. Look, you try to conjure up a sharper pun. Go on. I’ll wait. No? You can’t? You probably thought of Jingled Little Pill and realized the joke was a failure? Exactly what I suspected. My friend, this is what I do. I am a professional. Alanis Morissette announces her first-ever holiday album, and I present to you the “Christ-mess that you left when you went away.” That’s not merely opinionated music blogging. That’s a Christmas miracle.
Next month, Alanis Morissette will bless the world with her new yuletide collection Good Weather For Immaculate Conception. Is that title… ironic? I’m not entirely sure of the answer. I think so? Fuck. Anyway. The record features two newly written songs, which bear the very funny titles “Christmas On The Dance Floor” and “To An Empath At Christmas Time.” It also includes Morissette reimagining a handful of holiday classics, occasionally with special guests.
Today, Morissette unveils the album’s lead single, her rendition of “Beautiful Star Of Bethlehem,” a gospel hymn most famously recorded by the Judds. Her version features Brandi Carlile and comedy legend/bluegrass musician Steve Martin. Morissette and Carlile recently performed together at Red Rocks, and Martin recently participated in an all-star roots-music cover of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road.” Martin’s longtime collaborator and Only Murders In The Building co-star Martin Short also appears on Morissette’s LP, albeit on a completely different track. The album also features appearances from Joy Oladokun, Amythyst Kiah, and the British trans choir known as Trans Voices. Below, you’ll find Morissette’s take on “Beautiful Star Of Bethlehem” and the Good Weather For Immaculate Conception tracklist.
