Fresh off lending backing vocals on Greg Freeman’s latest release All Set The Bone and issuing her own EP Space, you big cloud, folk-rock singer-songwriter Anna McClellan wraps up a bustling year by unveiling another EP. South Of Dodge, a title drawn from a street in McClellan’s hometown of Omaha, is slated to arrive later this month, and she’s already shared the early track “Drank Earlier.” The next single, “Anywhere,” arrives as a collaboration with Garrett Burke, the Philadelphia-based producer and percussionist who goes by Gloorp. McClellan explains:
“Anywhere” centers on change just over the horizon, which tracks with the moment I wrote it—right before leaving Omaha. You know that moment when you’re supposed to be packing, but you instead linger at your piano and pen a song? I was falling in love, spending time with new friends. It felt fresh, as if a scene I’d dismissed as unattainable started to materialize. I realized that things tend to click into place seconds before you depart, making the farewell more bittersweet than I had pictured six months earlier. It honestly ALWAYS happens. I’m fairly sure Newton’s fourth law applies here? “An object about to be in motion must second guess everything.”
Massive thanks to Garrett Burke aka Gloorp for crafting the beat!!! I simply asked for a killer beat, and he delivered—if only every project were this effortless. Love you, Garrett.
Listen to how unexpectedly winning the blend of McClellan’s intimate Americana sits against Gloorp’s rattling electronic rhythms below.
The South Of Dodge EP arrives on 11/20 via Exploding In Sound.
