Australia’s Armlock have been gaining momentum since the release of their 2024 album Seashell Angel Lucky Charm. The duo booked dates with Snail Mail earlier this year, and Anxious cited them as an influence for their latest track “Don’t Move.” They’re back now with a new single, “Half Time.”
“‘Half Time’ is mostly trying to describe the gap between existing and feeling,” the band explains, elaborating:
“Tell me how to hear it” grew into a pivotal line, treating emotion as a slippery frequency we’re attempting to tune into but can’t quite grasp. It isn’t intended as a sad song; rather, it’s anchored in the frustration of squeezing more from each passing moment and a longing to sense what lies beneath the surface.
We tracked the song in our usual fashion within our own studios, constantly editing as we go. Sections were laid down at different tempos and sometimes in different keys. It can feel like you’re hearing version 1 and version 50 simultaneously. Demo ideas and final takes live together in the master. Geography and Juice Webster again contributed backing vocals. The video for “Half Time” was created with Tom Dunphy and Bridgette Winten. It mattered to us that the clip was bursting with color, echoing the lyric “just another rainbow.” We shot everything at double time with a high level of energy, though when played back in half time it comes off rather subdued, which feels fitting for the track’s meaning.
