Becky And The Birds is actually a solo project, and the person behind it isn’t named Becky. In truth, it represents Swedish singer, songwriter, and producer Thea Gustafsson, who uses this alias to release stylish, offbeat, R&B-infused pop. Her latest track “Way Back To You” blends rhythm with chopped-up vocal samples drawn from California recording sessions with her longtime collaborator Nick Velez.
“Way Back To You” began with the drums, which is unusual for me, Gustafsson explains. I built everything from that sensation and followed my instincts from there. I wanted the song to feel alive, a little unpredictable, and emotionally messy in the best possible way. It’s about longing for something you can’t quite reach, yet continuing to move toward it anyway.”
The song is paired with two distinct minimalist music videos by artist Ellen Nielsen. See both visuals below.
