“ready or not,” a new brakence album is on the horizon. After releasing a fresh single last week, the Columbus-based digicore standout announced his upcoming LP marroW on Tuesday. Today we’re served two more tracks ahead of the record’s release, three weeks from now.
Pinning down brakence’s sonic fingerprint isn’t easy. Hyperpop, emo rap, rock, and a spectrum of other styles collide across these tracks. He feels like one of those “post-everything” artists who seems destined to emerge from this era, even as he reaches back to older (20th-century) material alongside newer influences. The new track “crystallized” essentially channels blue-eyed soul for this generation. By contrast, the brisk “death roiL” blurs melodic rap, post-Radiohead alt-rock, and EDM. The production is sharp, the arrangements are vibrant, and the writing and performance carry real personality. I’m impressed!

marroW is scheduled for release on 10/23 via Columbia. Pre-save it here.
