Over the past several years Greg Freeman has solidified his place as a prolific and dearly liked figure within the underground rock scene. The roots-tinged singer is already riding the momentum from last year’s standout Burnover into a new era with All Set The Bone, a record he cut with the highly regarded producer John Congleton. The lead single “Indu” impressed fans, and the latest track released today continues that run of form.
“Cahokia” opens All Set The Bone and is presented as the album’s thesis statement. It’s an energetic, anthemic rock song that brightens Freeman’s post-Neil-inspired approach with a colossal major-key chorus, even though its subject matter leans toward caution. The track draws on the ancient American civilization that rose and fell in the Middle Ages, serving as a metaphor and a warning for our current moment. “These are the days of one thing after another,” Freeman sings. “Well if doomsday came and went for everybody else, I wonder.”
