Cara Delevingne has explained the reasons she chose to postpone pursuing a music career.
The British star, best known for her work as a model and actress, issued her debut album, Not Normal, in September.
The 34-year-old revealed that her battles with addiction had influenced the delay in starting her music career.
In an interview with Bustle, she explained that without sobriety she felt she was all over the place.
She added that, at that time, she would not have been able to cope with the scrutiny of her music, as she was on the edge of intense self-hatred.
Back then she could barely tolerate taunts about her looks or acting, but the pressure surrounding her music would have been too much, she said, adding that she simply wouldn’t have managed it.
Following years of battling drug dependence, the Paper Towns actress entered rehab in late 2022 and has remained sober since.
In 2020, Delevingne provided backing vocals on Fiona Apple’s Fetch the Bolt Cutters, and the two later joined forces to co-create the track Need It for the catwalk star’s debut album.
The Suicide Squad star described writing the verses as a back-and-forth exchange of Post-it Note images.
Commenting on the collaboration with Apple on the album, Delevingne said that although Apple isn’t overtly audible in the music, she has served as an inspiration personally and artistically, and she holds her in high regard.
