The rapid and ferocious Oakland-based hardcore outfit Cell Rot released Parasite last year, the initial installment of a two-part project tracked with the renowned punk and metal producer Jack Shirley. The forthcoming second half, Paradise, is slated for release soon.
In the opening track and lead single “Paradise/Parasite II,” the band emphasizes the kinship between the two terms and how their ideas intertwine. “Paradise! In search of your own paradise!” belts out vocalist Kyle. “Parasite! You’re feeding off others like a parasite!”
A note on Bandcamp clarifies the aim behind the release:
Parasite forms the first section of a broader meditation on consumption and decay. Parasites thrive on excess, chasing a paradise to consume. The comforts of modern life have left the world drained and increasingly uninhabitable. A world where the machines we create have exhausted the resources we need while we consume the machines’ own realm. In the end, the parasite remains as the only constant, existing to consume, leaving nothing behind while waiting for nothing to come.
