Belgian art-pop duo Charlotte Adigéry and Bolis Pupul began their collaboration on Adigéry’s self-titled debut EP in 2017 and later joined forces for the 2022 collaborative LP Topical Dancer. They are teaming up again, following the release of a single called “Googoo Gaga” last month; they are set to unveil their sophomore album as a duo in early next year, entitled Mainland Madinina.
They composed Mainland Madinina collectively in Ghent and in Martinique, the homeland of Adigéry’s mother. (Madinina is the original Indigenous name for Martinique.) This project marks the first material they tracked after both becoming parents and after Adigéry’s mother passed away. Soulwax stepped in as mentors and co-producers for the record, mirroring their role on Topical Dancer.
The duo’s newly released track “From Healer To Dealer” presents an agile, funky dance-pop groove that lasts eight and a half minutes, exploring two self-absorbed personas who converse entirely through buzzwords. The video was directed by Lennert Madou and stars dancers Emmanuelle Mfulu and Mathias Goethals. Below, you can view the clip, consult the Mainland Madinina tracklist, and see Adigéry and Pupul’s forthcoming tour schedule.
