Chip City, darling. Chip Chip City, darling. What do you suppose life is like inside Chip City? I suspect it’s pretty darn satisfying. I imagine the snacks are plentiful, and the vibe is easygoing. Picture yourself parked in front of the television after dinner, with a faint reminder of hunger lingering—that seems exactly the moment that place would satisfy it. This is guesswork, of course. To be certain, you’d have to ask My Wonderful Boyfriend. Yes, that’s the band’s name. I don’t have a wonderful boyfriend. My boyfriend isn’t worth much.
The Brooklyn indie trio My Wonderful Boyfriend popped onto our list of 2024’s standout new acts even before their debut EP An Evening With… dropped. The group followed that release with the standalone single “I’m Your Man” last year, and now they’re toasting a new deal with New West Records by unveiling “Chip City,” a ragged, creaky track anchored in an early Modest Mouse vibe that never fully disappears.
In a press release, My Wonderful Boyfriend frontman PJ McCormick states, “This is a love song from a guy who is a little drunker than he thinks he is. He’s a romantic, but he isn’t really finding the right words. He’s putting all his eggs in one basket, and it isn’t wise. He’s losing the plot. There’s maybe a line or two in the outro where he sobers up enough to get the picture.” Check out the Godfrey Nares-directed video below.
