Tim Kasher, the longtime frontman of Cursive and a former Saddle Creek labelmate of Conor Oberst, has also stepped into the director’s chair. A few years back, Kasher premiered his directorial debut—a discreet found-footage horror feature titled Who’s Watching. I haven’t had a chance to view it yet, but one can imagine that a tale about a chilling, obsessive stalker might resonate with Kasher’s own lyric sensibilities. Kasher also crafted the music for Who’s Watching, and a soundtrack album is slated to arrive next month. Today, Cursive reveals the new track they cut for the movie.
In recent times, Kasher has been taking Who’s Watching on the road, presenting screenings with intimate acoustic mini-sets of Cursive songs. The film has just dropped digitally and is in a limited theatrical release. Cursive’s new song “Wounded Animal,” their first since the 2024 album Devourer, channels a classic Cursive sound and extends the instrumental motifs Kasher embedded in the score. (Kasher’s solo project home phone also released a fresh album, Sponges Of Experience, earlier this year.)
Several tracks on the Who’s Watching soundtrack come from a fictional metal outfit called Toxic Cock Syndrome — an extraordinary name — which also features Jonah Ray, Josh Etheir, and Radkey’s Isaiah Radke and Darrion Lewis. Kasher plays guitar and provides backing vocals on those Toxic Cock Syndrome recordings. Below, check out “Wounded Animal” and the Who’s Watching trailer.
