Since 2010, Elena Tonra has steered the London-based indie-folk outfit Daughter; they unveiled their decade-old outtake “Not Enough” earlier this year. In 2018, Tonra issued a self-titled solo project under the moniker Ex:Re. She hadn’t planned to follow up, but over the past few years she began sketching a handful of song fragments, and now another Ex:Re record is on the horizon. The album is titled Save As — a catchy designation, a menu option I kept selecting — and it is due to arrive next month.
Save As was tracked with her Ex:Re producer Fabian Prynn, and the lineup includes Josephine Stephenson on cello, Hinako Omori on synth, Ben Reed on bass, and Jethro Fox on electric guitar. The opener, “Radio Station,” unfolds as a jangly, atmospheric piece about living in a state of transition. In a press release, Tonra explains, “The shifting radio dial is something I experience frequently — the push and pull of different feelings, and I end up feeling stuck because I can’t decide.” The video for “Radio Station,” directed by Angela Ricciardi, was shot in Paris; you can watch it below.
