Last month, Elvis Costello unveiled a 49th anniversary reissue of his debut album My Aim Is True, saying that the idea of a 50th anniversary edition struck him as “preposterous” and “made [his] teeth itch.” The five-CD box set runs through 104 tracks, with 52 of them previously unreleased. After sharing several versions of his 1977 single “Watching The Detectives,” he is now releasing the original take of “I Turn Around.”
“I Turn Around” was cut solo at Hope & Anchor Studio in early 1976 with Dave Robinson, the future co-founder of Stiff Records. A different version of it previously surfaced as a bonus track on his 1982 LP Imperial Bedroom.
“Anyone who has heard that peppy toe-tapper will be surprised to find that the entire title refrain had first served as the chorus of an entirely different story, written nineteen years earlier,” Costello says in the box set liner notes. Listen below.
