In the prior year, Flying Lotus released Ash, a science-fiction feature he directed and scored while in solitary confinement in New Zealand. After that project, he immediately turned his attention to Big Mama, his first full-length Flying Lotus release issued exclusively through Brainfeeder, the label he founded in 2008.
FlyLo produced the EP without relying on loops, delivering roughly 10–15 seconds of music each day before stitching the fragments together into what he describes as an “experimental, maximalist, hyperfast electronic burst of energy.” The record’s playful vibe is carried through to its artwork by Christopher Ian Macfarlane, an artist who shares FlyLo’s affection for 1990s animation like Ren & Stimpy.
