Friko – The Grimy Diamond

September 10, 2026

Back in April, Friko, the relatively new Chicago quartet, issued Something Worth Waiting For, an impressive indie rock LP that we placed among the year’s absolute best. This Friday, an expanded edition of that record is set to arrive. After unveiling “Necessary” with the news, the group this week added another bonus track, the visceral and melodic “Dirty Diamond.” It captures a hallmark Friko moment, with all members playing with ferocious energy while staying in perfect sync. Bailey Minzenberger’s drums sound particularly unleashed on this cut.

A word from Niko Kapetan:

One of our most sinister sounding songs to date, this one started out as more of a 6 minute epic but we ended up shortening it in the studio when we recorded it. It feels more concise and impactful as a burst of dark, ripping energy.

Something Worth Waiting For (Expanded Edition) is out 9/11 on ATO.

I write about music as a cultural signal, following the artists, scenes, releases, and movements that shape how people listen today. My work focuses on discovery, context, and the stories behind the sounds that travel beyond borders.
