Jason Calhoun, a Philadelphia-based ambient musician and composer, is preparing to release revelations of divine love, his fifth project for Dear Life Records. Thus far, the record has been introduced through meditative pieces like “tolstoy tatsoi,” “what we deserve,” and “at home,” and today he returns with “enjoy losing,” a warm, cosmic blip sparked by playing chess on his phone, after a run of early tracks that laid out a quiet, space-born mood hinting at the album’s scope.
“Entering this project, I chose not to learn how to win through theory but to discover it through trial and error,” Calhoun shares. “I had to learn to relish the game even when I was losing. You can call it poetics if you want, but that experience of loss feels tied to my musical and spiritual practice. I’ve grown patient with how my music takes shape, just as I’ve learned to welcome difficulty with open arms. This textural piece finds me with a contact mic and a rosary in hand, symbolizing my ongoing search for divine love.”
