Earlier in the year, Julianna Barwick and Mary Lattimore released the collaborative album Tragic Magic. They are now signaling a follow‑up project: a musical score for the Jessie Diggins documentary Threshold. Today marks the release of three selections from that score.
Threshold, directed by Lars and Torsten Brinkema, traces Diggins’ personal journey as an Olympic champion in cross‑country skiing. It is streaming now, and the initial score previews—“Cold Open,” “Sick And Tired,” and “Gallivare 10km”—offer a glimpse of the project. Lattimore offers the following thoughts:
Fresh off completing our Tragic Magic album in 2025, we were invited to co‑score this documentary about the brilliant Jessie Diggins. While Tragic Magic imposed certain instrumental constraints—historic, delicate and mysterious—we still had room to explore. With Threshold, the possibilities felt wide open, though the music remains anchored to Jessie’s life and the directors’ vision. Balancing both endeavors, two sides of the same coin, proved challenging, expansive for the imagination, and deeply rewarding as a duo this year. Jessie’s story features many triumphs and thrilling races, but also very human moments that call for musical tenderness. It was a pleasure to collaborate with Julianna, Lars, and Tor to craft melodies that elevate this compelling film about someone so admired.
The sixteen pieces on Threshold were composed by Barwick and Lattimore and were recorded in Los Angeles, in Highland Park and Echo Park. The three tracks released today can be heard below.
